A 51-year-old Lake Charles woman has been charged with forgery and theft of assets of an aged or disabled person, authorities said.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said Sheryl A. Myers, 2500 Smith Road Lot No. 61, is accused of stealing personal checks from an elderly woman.

“On Aug. 9, the Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from the family of the elderly victim,” Kim Myers said in a news release. “The family members discovered over $9,500 worth of checks had been written and cashed at several local banks.

“Sheryl Myers had been working as a sitter for the elderly woman for the past five months and had forged the victim’s signature on over 50 checks.”

Kim Myers said that when questioned by detectives, Sheryl Myers confirmed she forged the signature and cashed the stolen checks.

Judge Wilford Carter set her bond at $10,000.

Detective John Melton was the lead investigator.
