The city of Lake Charles will open the traveling exhibit “50 Greatest Photographs of National Geographic” with a free reception 5:30-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, in the Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center, 1001 Ryan St.

The exhibition, which will hang through April 13, showcases some of National Geographic’s most compelling photos, from Steve McCurry’s Afghan girl to Nick Nichols’ image of Jane Goodall and chimpanzee to Thomas Abercrombie’s never-before-seen view of Mecca.

The exhibition is based on the iPad app released by National Geographic in 2011, and devices featuring the app will be available in the gallery for visitors to experience.
