A Lake Charles man was dead of a gunshot wound when Lake Charles police arrived at his residence early Friday morning, authorities said.

After Joseph Blue, 29, was found dead, authorities arrested a woman who also lived at the residence at 2510 Hodges St. for the slaying, Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said.

Onzeletta Washington, 33, was charged with second-degree murder. Judge Clayton Davis set bond at $1 million.

While authorities didn’t give further information on the shooting, a person at the scene who identified himself as a family member said the two were a “regular couple.”

Police were called at 5:47 a.m., Kraus said.

Dave Mitchell, who lives across the street, said he didn’t hear anything, but “when I woke up all this was going on.”

Michelle Manuel, another neighbor, said she awoke at about 6 a.m. to commotion and saw a woman at the end of the home’s driveway shouting on the phone.

The woman mentioned a gun and said, “I need you to come now,” Manuel said. About two minutes later, seven police cars and an ambulance arrived.

Manuel and Mitchell said the neighborhood, which sits between 12th and Alamo streets, is generally peaceful.

“It’s usually quiet like it is now,” Mitchell, who has lived in the area for seven years, said around midday.

Manuel, who has lived at her residence for 13 years, said she had only seen police once before.

“It used to be a good neighborhood,” she said.(Johnathon Manning/American Press)
