Lake Arthur sets high playoff sights

Two years ago, the Lake Arthur Lady Tigers being a favorite in basketball would’ve been a long shot.

That began to change last season when, as a No. 12 seed, they qualified for the Class 2A quarterfinals. It may have been a bit of icing on the cake.

But now their sights are set much higher, entering the playoffs with a 25-3 record and the No. 2 seed. They open their playoff run at 7 p.m. today on their home floor against No. 31 Ferriday (10-11) in the bi-district round.

The winner will play the Haynes Academy-Capitol winner in the regional round.

Head coach Edie Higgins brings back an experienced group from last season’s run to the quarters, led by Elizabeth and Gabby Guidry. It’s a group determined to make even more noise than last season’s squad.

“They’re really excited,” Higgins said. “They’re ready and determined to make a playoff run. Last year, in the second round, they had a big win. That just transferred to the quarters. This year they’re hungry for more than the quarters. They really want to make a run and go for the championship.”

“They’re very athletic,” Higgins said of Ferriday. “They’ve got two very good guards; one is 5-9 who can shoot and take it to the hole. They like to get up, press and trap. They want to run and gun on you. They’re a lot like Mamou and have a lot of personnel like them.”

Any run the Tigers make could carry them to a quarterfinal matchup with No. 7-seed St. Thomas Aquinas.

“We have a good draw, but St. Thomas Aquinas is ranked No. 7, but they’re really a top-four team in Class 2A,” Higgins said. “If STA doesn’t get upset, it’s going to be a battle to get into the semis. I think of it as, we can take it all, but it’s not going to a cakewalk.”

But the road to a title might begin with the team’s psyche.

“We’re a very mature team,” Higgins said. “But, I think we can be hard on ourselves in situations that arise. We’ve (got to be) determined and show up to play.”
