The end of a long drought, a pair of rematches and a high seed for the Barbe Bucs highlight the football playoff pairings,
which were announced Sunday.
15 area teams qualified for the postseason. Barbe drew the area’s highest seed, No. 2 in Class 5A. St. Louis just snuck into
the Class 4A field as the No. 32 seed.
Hosting games will be Barbe in Class 5A, Washington-Marion and LaGrange in 4A, Jennings and Westlake in 3A, Rosepine, Kinder
and Welsh in 2A and Oberlin and Basile in 1A.
LaGrange will be at home to open the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
“It feels excellent, it really shows
the program is progessing and it says a lot about the dedication of the
coaches and players,”
said Gators head coach Jules Sullen.
“Just the opportunity to be around
these kids for four years, it is like a parent watching a child. First
the crawl, then
they walk and now they are running. We have had some laughter and
some tears but have always preservered. I am happy for them
to have this opportunity to host a playoff game. It shows that
through commitment and dedication, you can accomplish anything.”
The Gators, the 14th seed, will host No. 19 Franklinton.
“Offensively, they are pretty explosive,” Sullen said. “We have relied on our defense all year. If our offense can continue
to play at the same caliber, we have a great chance.”
Rosepine and Basile will be hosting familiar foes. The Eagles will host District 4-2A rival Lake Arthur, while Basile will
host Elton in a rematch of a game from the final week of the regular season, when Basile won 28-12.
“We will be awfully familiar with each other, that’s for sure,” said Basile head coach Tony Bertrand.
“It is hard to beat a team twice. We
just have to play ball and come out a little stronger. We came out a
little slow and
they will be ready to go. They will be getting a second chance. I
was pleased with our regular season. We played with a lot
of consistency, we ran the ball well and had a good showing
defensively all year. We won nine games, any time you can do that
it is a successful season. I just hope it carries over to the
playoffs.”
