BATON ROUGE — The LSU football team was minus one veteran and two incoming freshmen when the Tigers reporteds to campus to begin August drills today.

The first practics will be today, with the squad split into two workouts — mostly veterans in the morning while most of the freshmen and selected veterans participate in an afternoon workout.

Not among them will be projected starting safety Jalen Mills, who head coach Les Miles said remains under team suspension after being arrested for second-degree battery early in the summer.

Mills’ fate apparently rests with whether or not charges are filed in the case by the East Baton Rouge Parish district attorney’s office.

Of the incoming freshmen, two defensive tackles were missing.

Travonte Valentine of Hialeah, Fla., is still awaiting word from the NCAA clearinghouse to accept his high school transcripts, and Miles had no idea when or if that might come.

Meanwhile, Miles said incoming defensive tackle Trey Lealaimatafao of San Antonio “probably won’t play this year” after injuries received when he punched his hand through window at the football operations building a few weeks ago.

Most of the focus on fall camp will be the quarterback battle between sophomore Anthony Jennings and freshman Brandon Harris.

Miles said he wasn’t putting a deadline on naming a starter at the spot and it might not be until the week of the Aug. 30 season opener against Wisconsin.

For now, Harris and Jennings will be split apart for the first four days when the veterans and freshman are divided for workouts.

They will alternate with one working out with the freshman group each day and the other with the vets each day.(MGNonline)
