LAFAYETTE — LSU won its first road game of the season Tuesday night, defeating Louisiana-Lafayette 11-2 in front of a sellout crowd of 3,790 at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field, snapping the Ragin’ Cajuns’ four-game winning streak.
LSU (7-1) built a five-run lead after three innings and was up 11-0 after seven as the Ragin’ Cajuns (7-2) scored twice in the bottom of the ninth on a Dylan Butler hit. The Tigers have scored 24 runs in their last two games.
“I’m extremely proud and encouraged by our team’s performance, especially playing on the road for the first time this season,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “(LSU starter) Cody Glenn was magnificent on the mound, and he set the tone with an tremendous outing. I thought we were aggressive at the plate the entire night and demonstrated how productive we can be throughout the lineup. It was an excellent overall effort by our club in a challenging environment.”
It was LSU’s first trip to Lafayette since March 2002.
Freshman Alex Bregman was 2-for-5 with four RBIs, including his first career home run and a triple for LSU. Bregman hit a three-run shot in the third inning to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead. Raph Rhymes was 2-for-4 and designated hitter Tyler Moore came off the bench to go 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Christian Ibarra went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
An RBI bunt in the fourth inning by Ty Ross increased the LSU lead to 6-0. Moore hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning.
Glenn (1-0), a sophomore left-hander, threw seven shutout innings while allowing three hits and recording one strikeout. Reliever Nick Rumbelow worked a scoreless eighth inning, giving up one hit in his season debut after fighting back from a pulled oblique muscle suffered earlier in the season.
Kody Smith (0-1), the first of four ULL pitchers, allowed five runs in 2 1/3 innings.
