I am curious as to how the country of Chile in South America ended up such a long, narrow country, only 225 miles wide. I haven’t been able to find anything in the encyclopedias about that.
The Andes, a daunting mountain range that funneled the Spanish conquistadors southward in the 1500s, accounts for the nation’s width.
The length of Chile, which won independence from Spain in 1818, stems from late-19th-century military victories over Peru and Bolivia in the north and the near-coincidental subjugation of the indigenous Mapuche people in the south.
Latest lighting test ends in failure
Can you tell me the latest on the I-10 bridge lighting issue? I remember that they had installed LED test lights last year. A few weeks ago all the light poles came down. What’s next?
“A potential new lighting system was tested. However, the vibrations on the bridge appeared to have caused damage to some of the LED luminaires,” Deidra Druilet, spokeswoman for the state highway department, wrote in an email.
“After failure of the test lights and further evaluation of probable additional costs in engineering an acceptable lighting system, the city of Lake Charles chose not to pursue installing a lighting system.”
Library policy allows religious meetings
Why is it not allowed to conduct religious informational meetings in the meeting rooms at Calcasieu Parish libraries? We are not talking about church services. We are strictly talking about a study forum.
“Meeting facilities are available for use for charitable, civic, cultural, educational, informational, intellectual, or religious activities (with the exception of worship services),” reads the library system’s meeting room policy
“The following are not permitted: social affairs, point-of-purchase sales, exchange of money, taking orders for products, employment recruiting, flea markets, garage sales, and other similar activities.”
