The Imperial Calcasieu Museum will open the exhibit “Louisiana Through the Lens: Photographs by Debbie Fleming Caffery” on Friday, Jan. 17. The exhibit, in the Barham Gibson Gallery, will be on display through March 1.
Caffery, born in New Iberia, was inspired early on by the work of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans. Her photographs, she says, are the result of “an invisible line from my eyes to my heart to the tips of my fingers,” as if to underscore the strong personal relationships she establishes with her subjects.
The exhibit was organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art, which acquired 181 prints by Caffery in 2013. All of the prints in the exhibition are from that acquisition.
