Southwest Louisiana high school football fans will get their first taste of action this week as area teams play their annual jamborees.
The action kicks off tonight as Iowa hosts St. Louis Catholic in their annual preseason clash at 6 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets and Saints have made a tradition of squaring off with one another prior to the start of the regular season, but will now meet a second time, in October, with district title implications. The jamboree will allow the teams to get a closer look at their opponents, but it will serve more as a measuring stick to see where they are in regards to being prepared for the season, which opens next week.
“Of course we are playing a district opponent, and it’s nice to get a look at them, but we are going to treat this as just another scrimmage, except there will be more attention with more fans in the stadium and the media coverage,” said Iowa head coach Sean Richard. “We are still in the process of replacing a great quarterback that just graduated so the added pressure will allow us to get a better look at the candidates for that job in a real game situation.”
The Yellow Jackets and Saints enter the season as two of three favorites to win District 4-3A.
In Lake Charles, another pair of district rivals will square off as the LaGrange Gators play host to the Washington Marion Charging Indians.
Unlike Iowa and St. Louis, the Gators and Indians have played one another in district competition in each of the past two seasons. Kickoff at John J. Mims Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
On Friday night, McNeese State’s Cowboy Stadium will once again play host to Southwest Louisiana’s Lake Area Jamboree. The gridiron showcase will be played at the stadium for the sixth consecutive year and will feature its four traditional teams.
The Sam Houston Broncos will battle the Sulphur Golden Tors at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Barbe Bucs and Westlake Rams at 8 p.m.
This season the Bucs and Rams will go head to head, each sporting a future LSU Tiger. Barbe will be led by All-American wide receiver Trey Quinn and Westlake by receiver/tight end JaCory Washington. Sulphur and Barbe have each gotten the better of their counterparts in the past five years.
Other jamborees Friday include the Allen Parish and Jeff Davis Parish jamborees. Kinder plays host to Oakdale and Oberlin in the round-robin Allen Parish, while Lake Arthur and Elton visit Welsh in Jeff Davis Parish.

I hate to break your heart, but Kinder scored 18 points on oberlin in the Jamboree. I know every year y'all think you all will go to state but if you don't set your aspirations so high, the let down is not as bad. kinder is very week this year and still pulverized oberlin.
