LSU made it official Tuesday, announcing the hiring of Jeff Grimes as the Tigers’ new offensive line coach.

Grimes, who comes to LSU after one year at Virginia Tech, will also have the title of running game coordinator.

“He’s a tremendous technician and will do a great job teaching our offensive line,” LSU head coach Les Miles said. “He has a track record of putting guys in the NFL and producing outstanding offensive linemen. He’s a great addition to the staff and I’m looking forward to working with him for many years.”

Grimes has traveled a winding road to LSU, having coached at seven different schools before joining the Tigers, plus two others as a graduate assistant beginning in 1995 at Rice.

His most notable job was at Auburn (2009-12), where his offensive line protected Cam Newton en route to the 2010 BCS national championship. In 2000 while he was at Boise State, the Broncos led the nation in scoring offense.

Other stops for Grimes, all as offensive line coach, include Hardin-Simmons, Arizona State, Brigham Young and Colorado.

Grimes replaces Greg Studrawa, who LSU says left the program to pursue other opportunities.

“Jeff comes to our staff with great experience and as coach who is very familiar with the SEC,” Miles said. “He helped Auburn win a national title in 2010 and has been part of some very successful programs.”

A native of Garland, Texas, he lettered four years as an offensive lineman (1987-90) at UTEP and was in training camp with the Oakland Raiders before getting into coaching.
