Grand jury rejects all charges against Brown

A grand jury in state district court on Thursday rejected all charges against a man previously indicted on a charge of manslaughter.

The grand jury pondered charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter and negligent homicide against Michael Anthony Brown, 55, but declined all charges. Brown killed his Tousaint Road roommate, Gregory Lynn Bryant, 42, on June 22, 2013.

“Obviously we’re very pleased with this result,” said defense attorney King Alexander, who previously said that Brown acted in self-defense.

“The grand jury process has been in the news quite a bit lately and generally it is designed to be a one-sided process. But he did have, fortunately, the opportunity to speak to the grand jury, and he testified eloquently and it was information that we didn’t have previously and obviously that had a profound effect on the situation.”

Brown did not testify when he was indicted in August 2013, District Attorney John DeRosier said.

“This time he did, along with several other witnesses who were there when it happened,” DeRosier said. “Suffice it to say that the grand jury considered all of its options — very carefully, I might add — and reached the conclusion that they did based on the totality of what they heard from witnesses.

“Unless we get additional evidence, we are comfortable with that finding. Our business is to seek justice, not convictions.”

A Vinton school bus driver who authorities say admitted having sex with a teenage boy was indicted Thursday.

The grand jury returned a charge of carnal knowledge of a juvenile against Jessica Fenetz Hudson, 39, who was arrested in November on 20 counts of carnal knowledge. She is accused of having sex with the boy in January, when he was 14, and again during the summer, when the boy was 15.
