Grand jury backs NJ politician’s claim of bogus DWI arrest

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (AP) — A grand jury believes a New Jersey politician’s claim that his drunken driving arrest was bogus, a setup by a police officer who made up evidence.
Grand jurors in Gloucester County handed up a 14-count indictment Wednesday accusing Washington Township Police Officer Joseph DiBuonaventura of a list of crimes related to the July 2012 arrest of Assemblyman Paul Moriarty.
The accusations include falsifying evidence and false swearing. He could receive decades in prison if convicted on all counts.
The officer has been suspended. His lawyer has declined to comment.
Moriarty is a Democrat who once served as mayor of Washington Township in southern New Jersey. He says the indictment validates his claim that he was wronged.
