Fort Polk soldier dies in Afghanistan

Fort Drum, N.Y. — A soldier stationed at Fort Polk and serving in Gamberi, Afghanistan, died on Thursday in a non-combat related incident, according to a news release.

Sgt. William Brown III of Franklin, N.C., served as a healthcare specialist with the 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division. Brown deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in July 2013.Brown joined the Army in May 2010. After completing training at Fort Jackson, S.C., he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Brown arrived at Fort Polk in December 2012. 

Brown’s awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal and a Certificate of Achievement. He also completed the Brigade Combat Team Trauma, Warrior Leadership and Combat Lifesavers courses. ””
