Families Helping Families will hold its ninth annual Fore for Families golf tournament — a fundraiser to support programs for people with disabilities — on Oct. 11 at Gray Plantation Golf Course.

The two-person scramble format will begin shotgun style at 8:30 a.m.

“We don’t have a lot of two-person scrambles around,” said Susan Benoit, executive director of Families Helping Families. “We also have door prizes, and we’re going to feed people lunch.”

The tournament’s top three teams will receive gift certificates to Gray Plantation’s Pro Shop for $75, $50 and $25. Prizes will be awarded in two separate flights for low and high handicappers.

Benoit said the event helps support some of the organization’s unfunded programs such as the Next Chapter Book Club for adults with intellectual disabilities.

“The unique thing about us when families come to us is that all of the people who work here have a disability or have a child with a disability,” Benoit said. “We have access to all of the services that most people look for. Not only can we tell people where to go for services, but we can help them figure out what to ask for and support them along the way.”

Families Helping Families also provides referrals, education, training and peer support. And the group works with families who have questions about special education in school and advocacy, Benoit said.

“We also help people understand that having a disability is not the worst thing in the world,” she said.

Registration is $250 per team, which includes course and cart fees, lunch and a move up hole. Tournament and hole sponsorships are also available.

Benoit said the tournament typically fields about 25 teams but that there’s always room for more.

“We would love to have more teams this year,” she said. “We have a goal of 36 teams this year, but we would love to have more. We could probably go up to 50.”
