Officials will now stop games immediately to review whether players should be ejected under the NCAA’s new targeting rule.

This season, the NCAA changed the penalty for targeting defenseless players with a hit to the head by adding an ejection to the 15-yard penalty. A player who is ejected must sit out the first half of his team’s next game.

Rogers Redding, the NCAA’s national coordinator of football officials, said the new process will allow officials to review the play quickly to determine whether the player should be ejected. It also will eliminate the need for coaches to use a challenge to review targeting calls.

Officials still will not be able to overturn the 15-yard penalty on targeting calls.
