Fishing Report: Broussard says Big Lake fishing good overall

Big Lake guide and former Redfish Cup champion Capt. Kevin Broussard said fishing is good overall and the wind is blowing. If wind conditions are moderate allowing a free run of the lake, options are increased, which usually means a lot more fish in the boat at the end of the trip.
“Overall, fishing is good from Prien Lake (north) to the Jetties (south),” Broussard added.
He also mentioned some bird action early morning and late afternoon in Turners Bay.
He said he likes soft plastics, both with and without popping corks, while working birds.
As far as big trout, he suggested hitting the flats or reefs early, such as the Turners Bay flats with Super Spooks and She Dogs (topwaters).
Broussard, who said he has been fishing everyday the past several weeks, said the redfish have been good in Black Lake and still some schools of big reds in the middle of the lake under the birds. They will hit topwater as well as soft plastics on jig heads.
At Hackberry Rod and Gun, Capt. Buddy Oakes said the lack of strong winds has moved topwater trout fishing up a notch, and slick water and a walking, rattling topwater bait can cause you to lose your rod so hang on.
Favorite topwater tools include a big Mirrorlure Top Dog, She Dog or a pink Skitter Walk. On the Skitterwalk you want the Series 11, which is the big 4.75-inch one.
In addition, Corky Fat Boys (pearl) and Hackberry Hustlers on jig head have been doing very well on shell reefs in 5-6 feet of water and the number of 14- to 17-inch trout have been excellent.
At Calcasieu Point, the largest trout this week was caught in the Ladies Division, weighing 7.9 pounds.
According to Elaine Huck, our regular Big Lake source from the northern part of the lake, fishing improved somewhat on Thursday and improved through the weekend. On Sunday there were several limits of both specks and flounder.
According to Huck, the Four Corners and LNG Canal have been the most talked about hotspots from anglers launching at Calcasieu Point. However, that may be due to anglers trying to find fish that will bite while staying out of some of the wind.
