LAKE ARTHUR — The body of a woman was found in a shallow ditch Friday on Sixth Street off Commercial Street on the west side of Lake Arthur, authorities said.

The body was discovered at about 3 p.m. lying face down in a foot of water in a small wooded thicket near an old railroad track just across from the town’s water tower, Police Chief Cheryl Vincent said.

“About 3 p.m. we got a phone call that they thought it was a body in a ditch,” Vincent said. “We came out and verified there was a body laying in a shallow ditch, and we contacted the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office, who came out to assist.”

The victim is described as a white female believed to be in a her late 20s. She was clothed.

Authorities said they know the identify of the woman, but are withholding her name pending notification of family.

“We don’t know if foul play is involved,” Sheriff Ivy Woods said. “We will have to wait for the coroner’s report to determine if foul play is involved, but at this time it is being treated as a suspicious death.”

Authorities have no idea how long the body may have been there, Vincent said. There were no reports of any missing people, she said.

“Our next step is to question the family, who she hangs with and friends,” Vincent said. “We’ll take them one at a time and bring them in and talk to them.”

Investigators, including a team of forensic experts from Calcasieu Parish, cordoned off the area for several hours as they combed the area before removing the body at about 6 p.m.

Anyone with information should contact Lake Arthur police at 774-2411 or the Sheriff’s Office at 824-3850.
