Summer break is about six weeks away. Families desiring to enjoy some rest and relax together have plenty of options available, from nearby sites that can be enjoyed on a day trip to national attractions such as Disney World.

Travel agent Sonny Duplantis of Holiday Travel said families don’t have to go too far from home to find a good time.

“The Animal Safari over in Hammond is a nice place families can go,” Duplantis said.

“San Antonio is a very nice one. They have the water park, which is popular, the Alamo. You can go to the missions

“It is a nice destination for a long weekend trip, leaving Thursday morning and coming back late Sunday. The kids always love the Six Flags amusement park.

“Jackson, Miss., is also a good one with the Agricultural Museum ... that is very interesting. You can come back through Vicksburg where they have the Confederate park there.

“That would be a good trip that is pretty close. If you want just a one-day trip, you can go to the water park in Baton Rouge.

“Universal Studios is not for little kids, the 3- and 4-year-olds,” he said.

“The rides there are too intense for them. Once you get to kids 10-18, they love the rides at Universal. They have the ones where you twist and turn and go upside down and everything.

“If you are going to Disney World, check with a travel agent who can tell you about the different meal plans available and if you want to stay in a hotel or in the Wilderness resort or if you want to take your travel trailer.”

Here are suggestions by Duplantis:

Disney World in Orlando — Attractions include Magic Kingdon, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Disney Downtown, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon Water Parks. Available activities include shows, rides, golf, tennis and bowling. Nearby hotels range from value to deluxe options. Meal plans are also available.

Universal Studios — Duplantis says this is a better option for older children and reccomends getting a a 2-day pass, since the park is too big to take in on one day.

Cruises —Meals and entertainment is included, opportunities to sail and age-specific programs.

San Antonio — Six Flags, water park, Alamo are among the attractions available.

Jackson, Miss. —Attractions include Agricultrual Museum, Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, Children’s Museum and Museum of Natural History.
