Welsh officer under investigation after shooting suspect who pulled gun

WELSH — A Welsh police officer is under investigation after shooting a suspect who pulled a handgun on him during a traffic stop at the intersection of Beaufort and North Adams streets late Monday, authorities said.

“Around 11:30 p.m., one of our officers made a traffic stop,” said Welsh Police Chief Marcus Crochet. “During the course of the traffic stop, the subject produced a handgun, at which time our officer discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect.”

Police have not yet released the names of either the victim or the officer. The victim was taken to an area hospital and was later transported to the LSU hospital in Shreveport, state police said.

The officer, who was not injured, was placed on paid administrative leave, Crochet said.

State police Sgt. James Anderson confirmed Tuesday that state police had been asked to investigate the shooting. Such investigations are standard when an officer is involved in a shooting.””
