Ten students will be presented scholarships at the annual fundraiser and dance of the Tournament of the Stars on Saturday at the Lake Charles Civic Center. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Three bands will provide music for dance after a brief presentation ceremony, said Harold McReynolds, founder and president of the Tournament of Stars.

Special honoree will be Lake Charles Mayor Randy Roach. Each year a committee selects the honoree from nominees gathered by members, McReynolds said. Roach was chosen for his support of the tournament and for youth programs in the community,

“The Tournament of the Stars is the second-largest pro-am basketball tournament in the country, McReynolds told the American Press. “All proceeds from the fundraiser, the basketball tournament and a benefit golf tournament next month will be used to fund scholarships. Everything is tied into the scholarships.”

One of the first scholarship recipients said McReynolds is doing a wonderful thing with the Tournament of the Stars program.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to be honored with this award,” Crystal Johnson said. The first group of winners included her and two or three others.

In that year, 2000, the grants were $500 each. This year’s recipients will receive $1,000 each, she said.

McReynolds was involved in unaffiliated basketball after graduation from McNeese State University, where he played college ball.

The tournament was founded in 1995, and the scholarships were added. McReynolds dedicated the tournament to the memory of his father, who died in 1991, he said. The organization is a recognized nonprofit corporation, so donations are deductible on givers’ tax returns.

At Saturday’s event, food will be included in the admission price, and drinks will be available for purchase, he said.

Music will include City Heat, jazz saxophonist Mickey Smith Jr. and duo Lerone Rubin and Teka Briscoe.

The annual celebrity golf tournament will be held Aug. 8-9 at Koasati Pines in Kinder. The Tournament of the Stars will be Aug. 10-11 at various venues.
