Opelousas man charged in counterfeit operation

OPELOUSAS (AP) — Authorities say An Opelousas man has been arrested in connection with a counterfeiting ring that is alleged to have defrauded citizens across the country out of millions of dollars.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz told The Daily World Nelson Durald has been booked with theft and 151 counts of monetary instrument abuse.

Police said that Durald was creating highly realistic fake payroll checks, money orders and other such documents that were then cashed at businesses across the region, including some in St. Landry Parish.

Guidroz says the case remains under investigation and more arrests are possible.

It was unclear whether Durald has an attorney.
