LAFAYETTE (AP) — A grand jury has refused to indict an Acadia Parish man who had been arrested in connection with the defacing of a 9-11 monument in downtown Lafayette.

The incident happened last Sept. 11 at the monument, which includes scale models of the twin towers destroyed in the 2001 attacks.

Someone attached two cardboard airplanes to the memorial. A cutout of former President George W. Bush was placed nearby, showing him holding cash and a remote control.

Police arrested 35-year-old Salvador Perez of Rayne in the incident. But a grand jury on Thursday rejected criminal charges.

KATC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/17RuWEh) that police could still pursue charges if they get more evidence in the case.
