Cowgirls homestand begins against LSU-A

McNeese State’s women’s basketball team begins a four-game homestand, beginning at 2 p.m. today against LSU-Alexandria.

McNeese (1-1) is coming off a 100-34 road loss at No. 2 Texas Wednesday after picking up a 76-61 season opening win over Southern-New Orleans. LSU-A comes into the game with a 0-1 record but has played four exhibition games. The Generals’ loss was 84-68 to Xavier-New Orleans.

Seniors Keara Hudnall and Mercedes Rogers lead McNeese in scoring and rebounding. Hudnall is averaging 10.5 points per game and Rogers is averaging 8.0 boards per game. Freshman Bre’Ashlee Jones leads with five steals and sophomore Caitlin Davis is dishing out 4.5 assists per game.

LSU-A features former Southwest Louisiana high school players Paige Troutman (Hathaway) and Katie Lemieux (Fairview).

 

Men’s team plays two games in California

The McNeese State men’s basketball team started a two-game California trip Friday night at San Diego State.

The Cowboys (1-1) continue the trip at 5 p.m. Sunday at Loyola-Marymount in Los Angeles.

SDSU (1-1) won the previous two meetings, once in 1984 in Las Vegas (91-85) and at home in 2013 (65-36).

LMU (2-1) hasn’t played since beating Cal Riverside Wednesday night.

 

Season over for

volleyball team

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The McNeese State volleyball season came to an Friday when Central Arkansas beat the Cowgirls in four sets in the first round of the Southland Conference tournament.

The second-seeded Sugar Bears (25-4) advanced to play the winner of Friday night’s No. 3 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and No. 6 Sam Houston State game in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The seventh-seeded Cowgirls  (19-13) won the first set 25-23, but UCA won the next three, 25-23, 25-17 and 25-19. McNeese’s sophomore outside hitter Keegan Nelms put up a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.

McNeese swept the regular-season series, winning both matches in five sets.
