METAIRIE (AP) — Jerry Romig, the public address announcer at New Orleans Saints games since 1969, says he’s ready to hand the microphone over to his son, Mark, after Friday night’s preseason game against the Oakland Raiders in the Superdome.

The 83-year-old Romig says his voice is fine, but back problems have slowed him.

Romig says his greatest memories include his exclamation, “It’s good!,” after Tom Dempsey’s record-long, game-winning 63-yard field goal in 1970. He says he wanted to be loud enough so those walking outside old Tulane Stadium could hear it.

Mark Romig says his father wants him to show his own personality, but his mother says he should try to sound just like his dad.

Jerry Romig also handled P.A. duties for the first four Super Bowls in New Orleans.
