LCLT stages play on the decay of hotels, lives

The Lake Charles Little Theatre will present its production of “Hot L Baltimore” April 27-May 12 with performances at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.

“This is not a conventional play,” said James Johnson, director. “This play has no beginning, no middle, no end; it just happens. It’s about a formerly majestic hotel that has a date with a wrecking ball, and its tenants realize that their lives are just like the hotel — once grand and have fallen to pieces.”

The show has a cast of 13 characters, including a trio of prostitutes, a senile hypochondriac, a brother and sister duo, a semilucid Southern belle, and a mother fighting for the rights of her demented son. They bond over the destruction of their home.

“They sort of help each other out. They are aware of their crummy situation, but they still have some dignity and even after the hotel is destroyed they’ll find a way to get along in life and keep going,” Johnson said. “That’s what appealed to me about this play. It shows that plucky American spirit — you keep on going regardless of what you’ve been hit with.”
