BATON ROUGE (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal has agreed that state agencies should be banned from paying unequal wages to employees of different genders for the same job.

Jindal signed the Equal Pay for Women Act into law Wednesday. The bill by New Orleans Sen. Ed Murray doesn’t affect private companies.

In pushing for the bill, Murray said that women in Louisiana make 69 cents for every dollar that men make for performing the same job duties and holding the same title. He sought to include private companies in his legislation, but couldn’t get the votes.

The new law is limited to “any department, office, division, agency, commission, board, committee or other organizational unit of the state.”
