A Jennings man reached a plea deal Tuesday morning while his trial in 14th Judicial District Court was in the midst of jury selection.

Jarvis Pierre, 30, pleaded no contest to an amended charge of aggravated assault with a firearm, said Holly Carter, spokeswoman for the Calcasieu District Attorney’s Office.

Judge Kent Savoie sentenced Pierre to five years — a term to run consecutive to five years for violating his probation. He is not eligible for parole.

Pierre was originally charged with attempted second-degree murder. He was also charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, but that charge was dropped, Carter said.

The charges stem from an incident at the corner of Ernest Street and West 18th Street that occurred on June 2, 2009. Police said Pierre fired into a vehicle, before crashing his vehicle into two more vehicles. He did not strike anyone.

He then fled the scene.
