Eleven-year-old Jordan Walter’s essay, “What Christmas Means to Me,” earned him the right put the star on top of the Sulphur Christmas tree.

Walter won an essay contest hosted by the city and will read his writing Saturday night during the Spectacle of Lights, which is part of Christmas Under the Oaks at Heritage Square.

Walter put the star on the tree Wednesday morning.

The focus of his essay, Walter said, is “about giving, mostly.”

“It’s about giving presents, it’s also about giving presents to family members,” Walter said. “You should also give presents to the unfortunate to make their Christmas complete.”

Walter has been writing since he was little, said his poet mother, Taneisa Valyan.

“As he gets older, it just gets better,” she said.””
