The irony of McNeese State’s 2013 Pro Day is that the one player every scout wanted to see was the one who isn’t quite ready to be seen.

Senior safety Malcolm Bronson, still rehabbing a torn ACL suffered at Weber State in Week 3 of last season, was only able to participate in the bench press as 11 NFL scouts came to watch 13 Cowboy seniors and three Louisiana College players at the McNeese football complex Monday morning.

Bronson, who sat down with a Chicago Bears scout following the Pro Day drills and has trips planned to Oakland and Buffalo next month, isn’t concerned about his injury hampering his chances at latching on with an NFL team.

“I’m running straight ahead pretty good, and I’m doing figure-8s,” Bronson said. “In a few months I’ll be back to being my old self, but right now I’m just trying not to rush it and let my knee heal up so I don’t have to worry about it and have it keep lingering.”

Bronson said his knee is about “65 to 70 percent” of the way from being fully recovered, with the goal of getting back up to speed in a few months.

“I’m not a doctor,” Bronson joked. “But that’s how (close) I feel.”

With very little else to do, Bronson spent the majority of his Pro Day the same way he spent the majority of his senior season — trying to help by being the most supportive teammate possible.

“I got to watch my teammates be a Cowboy for the last time and showcase their skills,” Bronson said. “I didn’t get to do much, but I got to encourage them and see what it is you have to do to get into the league.”

Bronson tried to offer words of encouragement to fellow defensive backs Chris Raggett and Seth Thomas as they went through a slew of speed drills like the 40-yard dash and the shuttle run on the field.

Thomas also got plenty of help from his older brother, Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas, who showed up to lend some moral support.

Official timing results still haven’t been released, but receiver Darius Carey passed the eye test with a finger-tip grab during one of the pass-catching drills. Carey is scheduled to participate in a rookie mini-camp with the Saints.

Tackle Alec Savoie turned in the most dominant McNeese performance in the weight room, lifting 22 reps at 225 pounds. Savoie has a visit scheduled for Oakland next month and had a meeting scheduled with a Atlanta Falcons scout on Monday night.

“I had a good day. It’s nice to be on the field doing stuff in a McNeese uniform for the last time,” Savoie said. “I was worried about the short shuttle run, but I felt I did a decent job. I did more reps at 225 pounds than I’ve ever done before, and as far as vertical and broad jump I had pretty good results.”

NOTES: The teams with scouts in attendance were the Bears, Bills, Colts, Lions, Giants, Jets, Seahawks, Texans, Titans, Raiders and Saints … Defensive tackle Pat Williams said he will participate at Tulane’s Pro Day on Friday due to a hamstring injury sidelining him for Monday’s speed drills.
