City Council annexes 277 acres of land on La. 14

The Lake Charles City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved annexing 277.4 acres of land located off of La. 14 and East McNeese Street.
According to developers from Lafayette, the land is going to be used for the construction of a subdivision called Morganfield Development.
River Ranch Development Co., based in Lafayette, is overseeing the project. Company spokesman Robert Daigle told the City Council that 1,000 residential units will be constructed.
“And there will also be professional office spaces and 500,000 square feet of retail space in addition to the residential,” he said.
An architect from Baton Rouge will design the homes using smart growth principles.
Daigle said the development will be similar to River Ranch in Lafayette.
“At the end of the day, I think what we are doing will be something you will be proud of, and we expect to be a good neighbor,” he said.
The land will be part of City Council District F, now represented by Dana Jackson.
“I think this is going to be a great development,” he said. “I hope you fill it up quick.”
Daigle complimented City Hall for assisting the company with the annexation.
City Administrator John Cardone said water and sewer lines need to be extended to the development and that a fee will be charged.
He also said the city should not experience traffic difficulties as a result of the subdivision locating in the southeast part of the city.
“The intersection at East Prien Lake Road also has access to a five-lane road. It was designed to handle this type of traffic,” he said.
City Council members also approved a resolution to allow Mayor Randy Roach’s administration to negotiate a cooperative endeavor agreement with Morganfield representatives for the creation of an economic district.
