Four days and 72 holes of golf weren’t enough to separate Devin Carrey and Paul Haley II in the Kohl’s Open Championship at Gray Plantation Golf Club.

But it only took one more hole in a playoff between the two for the Canadian Carrey to come out one stroke ahead of Haley to capture the championship and $15,000 prize.

Carrey and Haley went back out to the 18th hole on Saturday afternoon and Haley looked to have an advantage after his tee shot landed in the fairway, while Carrey’s sat in the rough just off the fairway.

But Carrey’s second shot landed him about 4 feet away from the hole. Haley’s shot, on the other hand, fell across the green from the hole and he ended up making par. Carrey sunk his putt for the birdie and the win.

“I got pretty lucky on the second shot, because my lie was not very good in the rough,” Carrey said. “I kind of just hacked it as hard as I could. It just came out perfect, very lucky. You’ve got a 4-footer to win a golf tournament, that’s pretty fun. I just tried to enjoy it.”

Carrey and Haley finished at 19-under 269 on the weekend before the playoff. Haley had the stronger Saturday round, hitting 6-under 66, one stroke better than Carrey.

“I really haven’t driven it that well all four days, but my irons were good,” Haley said. “I putted really well this week. No three-putts, so that was good.”

Haley said he hoped the low-round four score would win him the tournament, and though it put him in position to do so, Carrey’s playoff performance proved too much for Haley.

The playoff presented a match of mental strength as well as technical skill for the golfers.

“You’ve got to refresh, especially on a hole like this,” Carrey said. “It’s one of the longer ones on the course and maybe a birdie will end up winning a playoff.”

Local golfer Neithan Allen, playing in his first professional tournament, finished 3-under 269, good enough for a tie for 26th place.

“It feels good,” Allen said. “I did everything I wanted to do. I made the cut and improved a little bit from the number I sat on at the cut line, so I can’t be upset at that. I left a few out there, but I knew just about everybody in the field left a lot out there. I’ll definitely take it for the first one.”

Allen’s first round was his strongest, a 5-under 67. He closed strong on Saturday with a 3-under 69.

“I started out a little shaky on the first couple holes on the backside,” he said. But I was able to recover and start playing a lot better and hit a couple rounds under par, so I’ll take that every time.”generic-golf-shot2013-10-05T15-28-09
