It was another day, another delay at the Kohl’s Invitational, the last stop on the Adams Tour at Gray Plantation.

First-round play was suspended Wednesday with showers hitting the course about 3 p.m., and was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, but fog pushed the start time back an hour.

The field wrapped up the first round on Thursday morning and continued uninhibited until the sun set, with about half of the golfers finishing the second round.

Canadian Devin Carrey leads the pack after the second day, posting an 8-under 64 Thursday for a 10-under 134. He leads the field by two shots.

“I just hit it a little closer to the hole than I did in the first round,” Carrey said. “In the first round, I kind of struggled with some wedges. But I was able to capitalize on some quality shots this afternoon and putted really well as well.”

Carrey evenly split four birdies across the front nine and four birdies across the back nine on the outing.

The leader made note of the strength of the field, and even guessed after he finished he wouldn’t be leading by the end of the round. Lucky for him, that assumption was wrong.

“I’m just going to have to keep making birdies, because that’s what you have to do to win out here,” he said.

The top 44 finishers after the first two rounds will move on to the final two today and Saturday. At the conclusion of Thursday’s play, the cut was projected to be 3.

John Kimbell, who was tied for fifth and three shots off the lead, said the course is as good as it could be, considering the conditions.

“It’s soaked, but you’ve got to play golf,” he said. “The greens were good still, they didn’t change a whole lot. It’s just wet. It didn’t affect me much. You can hit a lot of fairways because if it lands in the fairway, it stops in the fairway. It’s not like it bounces into the rough. What affected me was walking 25 holes today in the slop.”

Carrey said the golfers have had a number of rainy days on the tour this year, so they’re accustomed to some slop. There was a breeze on Thursday, but nothing more than enough to keep the mosquitoes at bay, he said.

Chris Ward, who led the field after the first round, shot an even-par 72 today, tying him for second place, two shots off the lead.

Ward started with a birdie on the first hole, but two bogeys and another birdie landed him even.

“I didn’t hit the ball very well,” he said. “Just didn’t make as many putts. I didn’t really make any mistakes, but just didn’t get anything going. … Really, I just have to keep doing what I’m doing. I need to be more confident on some of the putts I hit.”

Bill Alcorn and Ross Menard are also tied for second, while 10 players are tied for fifth.
