JENNINGS — The Jeff Davis Business Alliance board voted Friday to send a proposed name change to its members. The organization wants to change its name to the Jeff Davis Chamber of Commerce. The recommendation will go to a vote in August, said Executive Director Cynthia Hoffpauir.

“I think a lot of people call the business alliance and ask if they have the number of the chamber,” Vice Chairman Tony Hulsey said. “I don’t think they realize they are one in the same. This would simplify things and make it easier and more user friendly for people seeking to be a member of the chamber of commerce.”

Most people know what a chamber of commerce is, but are unsure of what the business alliance is, board member Joe Tupper said.

The alliance changed its name from the Greater Jennings Chamber of Commerce in 2005, making the organization a parishwide group. It comprises nearly 400 businesses and individual members.

The group is working to form a separate foundation and establish a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to seek educational grants and other funding. The group would operate as a separate entity with its own name, board members, mission statement and bylaws.
