MOSS BLUFF — After their girls teams shared the team prize last week, Barbe and St. Louis each claimed a team title of their own at the Bronco Relays on Tuesday, with the Bucs winning the boys team title and St. Louis taking the girls prize.

The Bucs held off Sulphur in the boys meet and finished second to the Saints in the girls meet.

The Barbe boys used depth to claim the title. John Lemke gave the Bucs their lone field event win in the triple jump with a best of 41 feet, 3 inches. The Bucs added two second- and third-place finishes in the field.

On the track the Bucs again won once — Trey Quinn in the 100-meter dash — but padded their point total with four seconds and three thirds. They won the meet with 126 points. Sulphur scored 112, dominating the track with six wins, including two by hurdler Devon Young and a pair of relay wins. Gary Blanchard won the 200 and Ethan Rapp the 400.

“We have to perform well in the field to be able to win a meet,” said Barbe coach Eric LeBlanc. “Our seniors are stepping up, all of our kids are stepping up. We have a good young team, a group of guys that love track and field.

“In the field, Brennan Travis did a good job in the shot put and discus — every event we scored in. Just about both of our entrants scored in every event. That puts us in good position on the track.”

LeBlanc said winning meets is key for his young squad.

“Everybody today ran better, threw better, jumped better. Everyone is progressing every single week,” he said. “If we are winning meets, that means we are performing well. It is fun winning meets, it keeps the kids motivated, keeps their spirits high. Every other school is getting better and so are we. We have to keep doing that.”

In the girls meet St. Louis outscored Barbe 136-116. Rhea Thompson won the shot put and discus to give the Saints a good start. On the track, the Saints won two of the three relays and got wins from Brianna Soram (100), Hannah Jackson (200), Sarah Booth (800 and 3,200) and Shondalyn Jasmine (300 hurdles).

Courtney Jicks won the long and triple jumps for Barbe, which got a win from Peyton Montgomery in the javelin.
