WESTLAKE — The Barbe Bucs and the Lacassine Lady Cardinals were the big winners at the Iberia Bank Westlake Tournament Wednesday as they took home the championship trophies.

The Barbe Bucs used a big first quarter and third quarter to take a 46-34 win over the Westlake Rams, while the Lady Cardinals used a big first quarter and held on for a 66-52 win over the Sulphur Tors.

The Bucs jumped on the Rams early in the first quarter to take an 8-0 lead. Tyrone Stewart scored seven of the Bucs’ 18 first-quarter points to take a 18-8 lead.

The Rams rallied in the second quarter after a 3-pointer by Chris Ledet cut the Bucs’ lead to 19-14 with 3:40 to play before the half. The Rams outscored the Bucs 9-5 in the second quarter, but the Bucs held on for a 23-17 halftime lead.

“We were able to handle their pressure early on and get some transition buckets,” said Barbe coach Carl Klein. “I thought defensively were able to extend a little bit and make them shoot some perimeter jump shots.”

The third quarter saw both teams struggle to get going offensively as both teams turned the ball over several times. Ben Dix gave Barbe a 25-19 lead with 5:13 to play. Westlake went on a 5-0 to cut the Barbe lead to 25-24 with 2:03 remaining in the quarter. Rene Scott’s 3-pointer with 1:40 stopped the Westlake run and gave Barbe a 28-24 lead.

The big momentum swing came in the final 26 seconds of the quarter. Barbe went on a 7-0 run to close out the quarter and ended with a half-court shot at the buzzer by Devin Anderson to take a 35-26 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Jacobe Escolavan’s 3-pointer for the Rams cut the Bucs led to 37-31 with 6:20 to play in the game. The Bucs were able hold the Rams scoreless the final 2:55 of the game to seal the victory.

Barbe was led in scoring by Stewart, who finished with 14 points, followed by Dix with 10 points. Escolavan led Westlake with eight points.

“I’m pleased with our performance as we have a lot of work to do to get where we need to be,” said Westlake coach Doug Morris. “Barbe played well tonight and their size gave them a big edge against us.”

Girls Championship

The Cardinals jumped on the Tors early behind an 11-2 run to open the game behind eight points from Madyson Brasseaux. The Cardinals outscored the Tors 19-5 in the first quarter to take the early lead.

Sulphur fought to get back in the game in the second quarter. A 9-0 run during the quarter cut the Lacassine lead to 24-22 with 3:32 to play before halftime. Consecutive baskets by Lindsey Priola and Abbie Melanson gave Lacassine a 28-22 lead with 2:39 to play in the quarter. Sulphur outscored Lacassine 23-25 in the second quarter but trailed 34-30 at the half.

Brasseaux took control of the game in the third quarter. She scored 10 third-quarter points to help the Cardinals outscore the Tors 17-13 to take a 51-43 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals opened the fourth quarter with the first four points to take a 55-43 lead. The Tors answered with baskets from Cierra Wilson and Kourtney Brooks to cut the lead to 55-47, the closest margin they got in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals outscored the Tors 15-9 in the quarter.

“We knew coming in Lacassine had played several more games than us this year and was a little more polished,” said Sulphur coach Helen LeFevre. “We didn’t have anyone who could stop Mady (Madyson Brasseaux) tonight as she was on. They had too many weapons for us.”

Brasseaux led Lacassine in scoring with 26 points. Haley Cooley and Melanson finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Sulphur was led in scoring by Wilson and Ally Cupit, who finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

“She’s a very special player and sets the tone for us really every day in the way she works,” Lacassine coach Jeremey Hollier said about Brasseaux. “Her effort carries over to everyone else and it really showed tonight.”

Lacassine’s Madyson Brasseaux
