An 85-year-old Lake Charles woman set fire to her Gulf Street home Tuesday night after a domestic dispute, city police said.
Ida Meche, 619 Gulf St., was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated arson and domestic abuse battery. Bond was set at $40,000.
Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said Meche committed battery against the victim and then purposely set the house on fire. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene, he said.
Authorities were called to the scene at 7:19 p.m. The fire was contained in one room and did not result in substantial damage, said Lake Charles Fire Chief Keith Murray.
“Thank goodness that we were able to get there and knock a lot of that out,” Murray said. “The house definitely didn’t get a whole lot of damage to it.”
He said police were handling the investigation.
