A private developer is interested in leasing more than 9,000 square feet of land at Lake Charles Regional Airport for the construction of eight T-hangars to house eight private planes.

“Right now we are at full capacity with our aircraft here in our bulk storage and our individual T-hangars, which house private aircraft,” said airport Executive Director Heath Allen.

“Fortunately, we have a third-party developer who is willing to come in and construct those hangars, and then they’ll sign a land lease with the airport.”

At its regular meeting Wednesday, the airport authority voted to advertise a request for bids from developers interested in leasing the land. The development is to be paid for and built by the developer.

At its next board meeting, the authority will theoretically accept that proposal and make sure it meets all of the airport’s minimum requirements, and then move on to executing a lease.

Allen said it is a good sign of general aviation growth at the airport. “It is really encouraging to see that need out there,” he said.

Allen said this is something that happens often at airports.

“It is not a specific company but different individuals who have aircraft and want a hangar,” he said. “Generally speaking, most people have a preference of having their own hangar for their aircraft.”
