The city of DeRidder will celebrate the Fourth of July this Friday with fireworks and free food starting at 7 p.m. at the Amerisafe Pavillilon on Washington Avenue.

“We’re having what we call an old-fashioned Fourth of July,” said Ashley Rush, project coordinator for the city.

“We have a live band, free hamburgers, hot dogs and watermelon. The Police Department cooks on site.”

The event will have something for every age. Live music will be provided by the band Beauregard’s Courtesy, and there will be a DJ.

An inflatable castle and chalk art will be available for children to enjoy.

Other events will include scooter races, tug of war and a pie eating contest for both children and adults.

Glow sticks will be given out to the first children who come. The celebration will end with a customary fireworks show.

According to Rush, the city aims for a 20-minute show, put on by the city’s Fire Department.

“Our focus this year and every year is trying to remember the great things about our country. We try to focus on what we were (America) built on.”
