The owner of Darrell’s, which was damaged in a fire May 7, said the restaurant could be open for business as early as next week.

“While we were down we took advantage of it and have done quite a bit of cosmetic stuff inside,” Darrell Derouen said.

Fire officials said the blaze originated in an ice machine and that firefighters were able to contain the flames, sparing most of the restaurant.

The fire caused minimal damage to the area around the ice machine, but there was smoke damage, Lake Charles Fire Department District Chief Tommy Thomas said.

Derouen said the fire did not affect the operating side of the restaurant. The damage was contained to the warehouse area. He said the restaurant has been at the West College Street location for nearly 20 years and that it was time for some changes anyway.

“It was time for a facelift, and we were able to do that also,” he said.
