While the McNeese State football team is playing in a top-10 matchup at the University of Northern Iowa this weekend, there are a couple significant McNeese sporting events taking place in town.

The Cowboy Stampede, which includes races open to the general public, middle school, high school and collegiate competitions, will take place Saturday morning at the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex.

The day will start with a fun run at 8 a.m. open to all runners. Proceeds from the run will go to Ainsley’s Angels of America, a group that raises money to provide riding-along programs for people with disabilities who have a passion for participating in races or triathalons but are hampered by their conditions.

After the fun run, the women’s college 5K will take place and the men’s college 4-mile race will follow that.

Colleges competing in the meet include Louisiana Tech, LSU, Northwestern State, Southern University and Southern-New Orleans, Tulane, Southeastern Louisiana, Louisiana-Lafayette and Centenary. Central Arkansas will also make the trip.

“We’ve attracted a lot of schools in the state of Louisiana,” said McNeese coach Brendon Gilroy. “We don’t have a state championship, but it’s kind of the unofficial one. The kids like it and we want to step up and have bragging rights within the state of Louisiana, to say the least.”

“Individually, we’re getting better,” Gilroy said of the women’s cross country team. “Amy Talbot was an all-conference competitor and did a pretty good job at Rice. She should be up there with the top girls Saturday. It will give Amy a good gauge to see where she’s at.”

• NOTE: Runners can register online by going to Entry fee is $15 if done online or $20 the day of the event. Under 14 years of age, entry fee is $10 online or $15 on race day.

The McNeese State softball team will host the Fall Cowgirl Classic on Saturday and Sunday at the North Frasch Park Field in Sulphur.

The Classic is a round-robin. Teams include Nicholls State, LSU-Eunice, Trinity (Texas) Valley Community College, Baton Rouge Community College, Bossier City Community College, Oklahoma Wesleyan and Lamar-Port Arthur (Texas).

There will also be more than 40 under-18 and under-16 travel teams from Louisiana and Texas. The Cowgirls will play the USSSA Pride, the National Pro Fastpitch champions, at 8 p.m. Saturday.
