A man authorities believe was impaired during a four-vehicle crash on La. 27 that took the life of a Calcasieu sheriff’s deputy was indicted on a negligent homicide charge Thursday in state district court.
State police said Charles W. Harrell, 30, crossed the center line of the Carlyss roadway and struck Deputy Randall Lee Benoit, 41, head on.
Harrell was impaired at the time of the accident, District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Holly Carter said.
State police said that after Harrell’s 2003 Ford Focus drifted across the center line and collided with Benoit’s squad car, another vehicle rear-ended Benoit’s vehicle, sending it into the next lane, where it was struck by a truck.
Neither Benoit nor Harrell was wearing seatbelts, troopers said. Benoit was an 18-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office.
