GRAND ISLE (AP) — The Army Corps of Engineers is embarking on an effort to repair a Grand Isle dune damaged by storm surge from Hurricane Isaac in 2012 and other storms.

The corps said Monday that construction along a 2,000-foot stretch of the dune at the southwestern end of Grand Isle is expected to begin in early July and end in September.

Grand Isle beaches outside that section will remain open during the work.

The dune was built to reduce the effects of storm surge after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

In April, the corps awarded a $2.5 million contract for the work to Grillot Construction LLC, of Belle Chasse. The project includes the replacement of a damaged section of geotextile tube and reconstruction of the sand dune crown.
