Chemical leak reported at Port Allen facility

Last Modified: Monday, August 12, 2013 4:14 PM

PORT ALLEN (AP) — Authorities in West Baton Rouge Parish are responding to a chemical leak at an industrial facility along the Mississippi River.

Louisiana State Police Capt. Doug Cain said nobody was injured at an Intercontinental Terminals Company facility in Port Allen after lightning apparently struck a tank storing butadiene, triggering a leak of the flammable gas.

Cain said the facility was evacuated and nearby roads were closed as a precaution while workers doused the tank with water. No residents had to be evacuated from the area.

Cain said the state Department of Environmental Quality was performing air quality tests at the scene.
