The Southwest Louisiana Charter Academy chose land at the corner of East McNeese Street and South Park Drive because the board of trustees expects the area to grow, school officials said.

The school is spending $1.2 million for a 10-acre tract, on which it plans to build a $10.5 million school, Henry Mancuso, board executive secretary, said Tuesday.

The $11.7 million project should be completed in time for the 2014-2015 school year, and it will be paid for with tax-free bonds, he said.

“We believe southeast Lake Charles is going to be a place of future growth and development,” Mancuso said.

The charter school is now housed in a building on Power Centre Parkway.

“We’re very excited to have a location,” Mancuso said. “I know the parents are very excited. To be in a temporary location for a second year is not we wanted, so we are very excited.”

He said the school will have labs, startup technology equipment and a gym.

Locations on Ham Reid Road were also considered, he said.

The school now goes up to seventh grade, but will add eighth grade when it moves, Mancuso said.

He said the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has approved a high school to open in 2014, but a location has not been secured.

Title: Response to north lake Charles

Believe me Doug, I don't think ANYONE in south LC would have a problem with the new charter school being in North LC.

Title: North Lake Charles?

Is anyone looking out for North Lake Charles? Are those students supposed to go all the way there for their shot at at a "decent" education? NO student should ever be farther than walking distance from a top-notch education.
