A local radio station host believes spending the night in a tent in a parking lot is a small price to pay to help alleviate hunger in Lake Charles.

KYKZ is hosting its 18th annual Camp Out for a Cause from 5 a.m. today to noon Wednesday, Nov. 26. Food donations will be accepted in front of Ashley Furniture on 3625 Highway 14.

Chad Austin, morning show host on KYKZ-FM, has pitched a tent and will collect goods around the clock.

“It’s an event we put on the week leading up to Thanksgiving every year to take food donations for the homeless, the elderly, less fortunate and the needy right here in our very own community,” Austin said. “My promise is I will collect your food from you or your car. All you have to do is drive up, rain or shine, day and night. I’ll be there.”

Austin will have an enclosed cargo trailer to collect canned goods, dry goods and rice. A refrigerated trailer will also be on site to store hams, turkeys, sausage and other meats.

In addition, paper goods are also encouraged to be dropped off.

Items collected at the food drive will be given to Abraham’s Tent — a local nonprofit that serves more than 250 meals a day for homeless and low-income residents.

“You can’t turn your back any longer in our community on these folks who live here or live off the streets, or live on a fixed income in the high rise downtown at Chateau du lac,” Austin said. “Everybody deserves a nice, warm meal and they know they can get that over at Abraham’s Tent. It’s a way that we can give back to the community.”(Rick Hickman/American Press)
