Calcasieu Point Landing boat launch to be closed for repair work

Calcasieu Point Landing’s boat launch will be closed for several months so that crews can replace and repave a 23,000-square-foot concrete area around the boat launch, officials said. Police jurors last week approved the low bid of $582,000 from K & J Development of SWLA to do the work. Kane Webb, the parish’s director of facility management, said the boat launch is set to be closed Dec. 15, and that it will likely reopen by late February or early March.

“We picked this time of year because it was the slowest time,” he said. “This was the two to three months out of the year we would disrupt fishermen the least.”

Webb said the project scope was initially set at 100 days, but an alternate bid was sent out to find out how much the companies would charge to get the work done in 70 days.

He said the additional cost was still within budget.

District 14 Police Juror Hal McMillin said at last week’s meeting that repairing the boat launch “is going to be an inconvenience,” but that it needs the work “to get it back to its standards.” The concrete area around the boat launch “is cracking and unsafe,” he said.

“People will just have to bear with us on this one,” McMillin said. “It’s going to be much better when it reopens. It’s such a well-used facility.”

Other work includes resetting light poles and curbs that surround the concrete area, Webb said.

Calcasieu Point Landing, located at 3955 Henry Pugh Rd., is open from 5 a.m. through 11 p.m. daily, and the boat launch is open 24 hours until it is closed for repair.
