One day last week I took my break from work at about 2 p.m. I decided I wanted some pork chops, gravy and rice. I remembered riding down La. 14 and seeing a sign that read, “smothered pork chops and oxtails.” I had never eaten at the place, so I decided to try it out.
If you’re looking for home-style cooking or soul food, The Spot Cafe is the place to dine. I arrived at about 2:30 p.m. Parking is available directly in front of the small restaurant, located between a barber shop and a grocery store.
I walked right in and noticed immediately the home-like feel. The decor was simple yet clean — which makes you feel comfortable.
The owner runs the restaurant alone but offers many entrees. This particular day she had smothered pork chops, fried fish, baked chicken, oxtails, rice, okra, potato salad, red beans, rolls and cake. I decided to go with the pork chops, gravy and rice, side of okra and black-eyed peas. My dessert was a slice of vanilla cake. My beverage was a can of cream soda.
The owner was nice and we held a conversation, since I was eating alone. The gravy was thick and covered a medium-size pork chop over rice. The pork chop was well-seasoned and tender. I didn’t even have to use a knife. The gravy was a good consistency and reminded me of my grandmother’s home cooking. The rice was just how I like it: firm, not gummy or hard. The black-eyed peas were seasoned perfectly and were full of flavor, thanks to the bacon.
Another day, I decided to go back and try beef tips with rice and gravy. I decided to get black-eyed peas again, since they were tasty the first time. For a new side, I decided on cabbage. The beef tips were tender and went well with the firm rice. The gravy was brown and thick and clung to the beef tips. The cabbage was spicy, but had a mild sweet kick to it. I decided not to get a dessert this time; I’m not really big on sweets. The price was the same as the first time, and I was satisfied with the meal.
I enjoyed both meals, but preferred the pork chops. On both occasions, I wasn’t able to eat all of my food, so I took the rest home for supper. This satisfied me because I was able to get full and still have food for later.
The price of my plate lunch was $8.75, including tax. It was well worth it and came with plenty of food. The service was excellent and friendly, which is why I plan on visiting again.
