Barbe issued another dose of heartbreak to Dutchtown, ralling for a 14-10 Class 5A bi-district round win over the Griffins Friday night.

The Bucs (9-2) advanced to host Mandeville, a 14-7 winner over Slidell, in the regional round next week.

Barbe also eliminated Dutchtown (4-7) in 2008, stopping the Griffins on a 2-point conversion attempt with no time left on the clock.

This time, the Bucs offense did the job, scoring two touchdowns in the final quarter after being held in check over the first three quarters.

Gavin Nettles scored on an 8-yard scramble with 7:08 left to pull the Bucs within 10-8.

After the Bucs defense forced a three-and-out, Nettles drove the Bucs 56 yards in six plays for the winning score, finding Darrian Gumbs along the right sideline in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown with 3:21 remaining.

“Those last two possessions we realized that was it, if we lost we went home if we scored we win and advanced to the next round,” Nettles said. “We stayed together, fought and came out with it.”

Keelyn Jackson intercepted a Dutchtown pass with 2:35 left to seal the win.

“It’s a moment a will never forget,” he said. “I didn’t do any thing different than any other play, I was just in the right place at the right time. Thankfully, I have a team that never gives up.”

Nettles finished with 221 yards passing. Kirkland Banks ran for 134 yards. Garrett Williams had eight receptions for 128 yards, including receptions on the first three plays of the winning drive. Those plays covered 39 yards and set the Bucs up at the Dutchtown 18.

Dutchtown had taken a 10-2 lead into halftime. Kajuan Coleman scored on an 8-yard screen pass from Brand Fritsche in the first quarter. Justin Reid drilled a 45-yard field goal just before halftime.

Barbe scored a safety when an errant punt snap was recovered by the Griffins in their own end zone.

Reid was a one-man wrecking crew defensively, intercepting a pass, making two sacks, two tackles for losses and batting down another pass.

The Barbe defense gave up one first down in the second half and recovered two fumbles, the second of which set up their first touchdown drive.

“Our coaches just kept making adjustments, we finally found some things that would work and the kids went out and executed,” said Barbe head coach Mike Cutrera.

“They were doing a good job of mixing things up, they were playing a lot of people defensively, going from an even man front to and odd man front, giving us different things. Our kids went out and made plays. I know they are going to play for 48 minutes.”
