Last Modified: Friday, February 14, 2014 12:15 PMComing off a 43-20 season in which it made the NCAA regionals, Louisiana-Lafayette was picked as the overwhelming preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference’s baseball championship.
The Ragin’ Cajuns grabbed eight of 10 first-place votes.
They placed six players on the All-SBC preseason team, including Kinder native Blake Trahan at shortstop. Teammates Caleb Adams and Austin Robichaux were picked as the league’s preseason player and pitcher of the year, respectively.
Trahan is coming off a freshman season when he hit .319 with four homers and 38 RBIs while going 13-for-13 in stolen bases. He led the team in starts, starting in all 62 games he played for ULL.
Trahan is joined on the preseason team by Robichaux, junior catcher Michael Strentz, junior third baseman Tyler Girouard, senior outfielder Seth Harrison and Adams, a junior designated hitter.
The Cajuns have also been getting some national love, getting ranked 14th in Baseball America’s preseason poll and 23rd in the Collegiate Baseball poll.
“We have to go out and play,” ULL head coach Tony Robichaux said. “You don’t get crowned a champion off of rankings. We are getting prepared for that, and hopefully the rest will fall into place.”
The Baseball America ranking is the highest preseason ranking ever for the program and its first appearance in the poll since 2008.
South Alabama was tabbed to finish second in the Sun Belt and Troy third. South Alabama grabbed a first-place while ULL’s in-state rival Louisiana-Monroe grabbed the remaining top vote despite being picked to finish last.
ULL opens its season with a three-game series against Eastern Illinois beginning Friday at its home field, M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
